What We Do
People have been trying to account for their money for a very long time. Clerks In Mesopotamia kept track of their inventory, sales, loans, and payments on clay tablets 7,000 years ago. The Babylonians developed bookkeeping accounts 4,600 years ago that we would recognize today. But it wasn’t until the Italian Luca Pacioli (that's him in his bathrobe on the left) invented double-entry bookkeeping in 1494 that accounting started to look like what we see today. Dutch traders later revolutionized international commerce in the 17th century in large part by learning how to manage more advanced accounting systems.
At B.T. Mills & Company, our main business is applying the latest bookkeeping and accounting techniques to identify, track, and quantify the everyday activities that determine the profitability, and resilience, of our client’s business. We do this in several ways, from good ‘ol fashioned time and motion studies to statistical quality control and financial analysis. We look for patterns in the numbers that are associated with higher profitability and deviations from industry standards that indicate inefficiencies. When the data points are all combined, a detailed picture of the business as a whole emerges.
That is modern bookkeeping.
We also manage State sales taxes and provide Federal income tax planning and quarterly as well as end-of-year filings.
Who We Are
Brad Mills is a Certified QuickBooks Pro Advisor and a Senior Small Business Tax Specialist at H&R Block. He graduated from Stanford University with an Honors Degree in Economics and did graduate work in economic development at Stanford and at the Universidad de los Andes in Colombia. Having founded and managed several companies over the past 30 years, he has extensive experience in finance, new business development, strategic marketing, and risk management. He also owns Coffee Partners LLC, a bookkeeping and tax operation that specializes in working with specialty coffee roasters.
B.T. Mills and Company is associated with Certified Public Accountants in Asheville who perform official functions for us such as audits and providing the certified, GAAP-compliant financial statements required by banks and other institutions.
